Sensation Seeking

11/15/21

This week in ISM I learned about the role sensation seeking plays in sports-related concussion management. I learned that by testing to see if athletes are more prone to taking risks, physicians can predict who is likely to sustain a concussion in their given sports. In fact, I discovered that athletes who play contact sports like hockey are more likely to be risk-takers, furthering their likelihood to get a concussion. Moreover, I was successful this week in that I further solidified my understanding of concussion predictors. I feel as though this area of research is very important for my original work project, as my primary goal is to raise awareness on neurological issues that arise in athletes, and by researching estimators I can stress concussion preventive measures. On the other hand, a challenge I faced this week was scheduling an interview with a physician who reached out to me. It seemed as though our schedules were very conflicting, especially because I had a basketball tournament this week. Now that basketball season has begun, I need to be on top of my time management, as all of my ISM duties are going to begin to add up. However despite this little point of frustration, I was finally able to schedule the interview for this weekend, and it went extremely well!
