This week in ISM I researched whether or not autism is preventable, and the likelihood of a child with autism's sibling to have autism as well. I learned that autism is not necessarily preventable, but early intervention is crucial in lessening the outcomes. I also learned that there is significant family risk when it comes to autism, but until we gain a better understanding of the specific role of genes, the environment, and their interactions, we can’t really nail down the risk for family members. I also had a mentor meeting this week. Our meeting was so useful for me as Dr. Covert helped me realize that a good way to display all of my research is through a case study tree diagram. This would mean that I would build a case and explain the specific steps and outcomes you would typically expect. In terms of this coming week, I am going to work on synthesizing my research to start building up this case study. I am also going to start working on building a two-page paper on all of the knowledge I have gathered thus far, for a parent to utilize when it comes to how they go about communicating and nurturing their child with autism.
