This week in ISM I researched pathways to independence and common speech delays in autistic children. I learned that there are programs to build up a child’s likelihood to become independent by strengthening their social abilities through targeted skill building, and I also learned of some common misconceptions that parents of autistic children have when it comes to their child's verbal skills. With the help of Dr. Covert, I was able to break these articles down and extract its importance for my final product project itself. I realized this week that although I have a good amount of research thus far, I still have ways to go to build up a respectable piece of literature for my project. Next week, I plan on starting to shadow my mother so that I can see what exactly parents of children with autism are concerned about, which help me further direct my research in an area that is extremely useful for caregivers. Also, as the research showcase is this Wednesday I need to finalize all that I am going to say to those who come up to my board to make sure I give a professional oral presentation of all my hardwork from the fall semester of ISM.
