This week in ISM I researched mirror neurons, and in particular mirror neurons in autistic patients. I learned that a malfunctioning of the mirror neuron system is an underlying factor in the cognitive deficit in autism. This explains why autistic people struggle to understand why people perform certain tasks and do not comprehend basic social cues. While learning about these neurocognitive deficits in autism, I garnered a passion for this area of study. I could potentially for my final product do something in this avenue by performing similar mirror neuron tests, and as my mom is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician she could help me perform these tests on her autistic patients. On the other hand, a challenge I faced this week was as Covid is seeming to worsen with the spread of the Omicron virus, my mentor’s administrators informed her that she could only mentor me virtually. Although this was a little disappointing, I am still extremely grateful to have her guide me in my ISM journey, and I know that this is what is best for the sake of the hospital system. On another note, next week I am looking forward to finalizing my ideas for my final product project, and beginning to plan out the logistics of it.
