Ethics of Autism

2/7/21

This week in ISM I continued working on my final product project. Together with my mentor, we analyzed a set of frequently asked questions by parents of autistic children, and then based our starting research off of those questions. When analyzing the questions, we realized that there is a lot of caregiver guilt in terms of putting the blame on themselves for why their child has autism, so we decided to research the ethical dimensions of early diagnosing. Through our research, we figured out that there is a lack of clear cut research on early diagnosis, resulting in a long lag between parents' concern versus actual diagnosis. This can lead to a lot of stress on the parents, so instead doctors need to emphasize a preventative approach. This approach stresses that autism is nothing that you can prevent, but is something as a parent you can prevent the full expression of. Analyzing this research article with Dr. Covert was so beneficial as she helped break down all the medical terminology in an easy to understand way for me. Together we really made great strides on laying the groundwork for my project. In terms of next week's plans, I need to focus on building my tri-fold for the research showcase. I can’t wait to get to display all my hardwork from the fall semester on it!
